L’Aquila, capital of Italy’s Abruzzo Region, is deeply engaged in climate action. As a Charter Signatory in the EU Mission for Adaptation to Climate Change and part of the Twinning Programme with Drammen, Norway, the city actively addresses climate challenges. Initiatives include drafting a Mitigation and Adaptation Plan targeting emission reduction across key sectors. To offset remaining emissions, L’Aquila focuses on expanding urban forestry and green spaces, prioritizing nature-based solutions. Additionally, the city leads the Experimental Program for Climate Change Adaptation in Urban Areas and spearheads The Aterno River Contract, safeguarding water resources and promoting climate resilience.
